Income Benefits - please help!
13 Answers
Hi everyone, I am an 18 year old student, just moved out of parents' house and now living alone. I am still studying full time and have a weekend job. From my job I earn 200 a month, my rent is 325 a month. When looking online, and filling out a form, I was told I was not elegible to receive income benefits because a) I have a job and b) I am still in education. This seems completely ridiculous to me, as if I didn't work I would easily receive enough to cover my rent and more, but as I am an honest hardworking person I want to keep my job. Does anyone know of anything that would enable me to receive additional help towards my rent? I would rather not take on more overtime so that I can focus on my studies. I did look up EMA but that also says that I must be receiving income benefit in order to qualify. Thanks to all answers, in desperate need of help!!

I may be wrong but I can't see you getting anything. Couldn't most students say they were in this position. Sadly the grants/support system for students seems to assume the student is dependent on parental income, and maintenance loans exist to support you I'm not sure though at what age or in what circumstances that presumption changes.
If you have a look here, http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearni ng/14To19/MoneyToLearn/EMA/DG_066951 you'll see entitlement to EMA is based on household income and you do not need to be getting Income Support.
hugs I sympathise, my daughter is 22, at uni, living at home to minimise the total cost that she has to repay on her loan,so effectively we are supporting her. What annoys me is that if she were to move in with her boyfriend, our income would still have an effect on what she is entitled to,so as factor says, it is dependant on parental income, know this might not help but it is a subject close to my heart, and it seems unfair, hope you have luck with your EMA claim, Slinky x
I've had a look at a Scots application form and it would seem that if you are living apart from yir parent(s) you have to be in receipt of benefits. This is not mentioned on the Government's own website (or if it is it's not obvious.)
There have been a couple of times when the information on the Government's directgov site has missed out important info and this would seem to be another one.
