My mother and siblings called their father Poppy. We grandchildren did too. He died when I was about eight.
Many years later my sister, who lived three doors from my mother, got a dog which I think already had the name Poppy.
My mother hit the roof. She phoned me ranting and raving about how she couldn't live with sister calling for the dog and reminding her of her dead father. She'd be in tears every time she heard her grandchildren playing with the dog. I must come over and sort it out and get the name of the dog changed. Just hearing the name would stir memories.

When I got there my sister started ranting about how changing the dog's name would confuse it and damage it's mental health. She wouldn't do that to the dog. They had fallen out big time.
I figured the only one with damaged mental health in this family would be me.

The dog ran away not long after. I didn't blame it.

I now have a Great-granddaughter named Poppy. It's probably just as well my mother isn't alive.
I couldn't go through that again. :-)

Thank you Jno... I never knew that. i always thought Antony meant strength

Lankeela ..I quite like the name Jacqueline but any Jacqueline I have ever met or read about seem to be ladies of strong character and mind. Sounds powerful. Jackie Kennedy for one,
And this is really not me.
Lottie My father-in-law was known as Pops to everyone.
All the family, the people at the shops who knew him and even his wife called him Pops.
My dad took my brother (who was about 9 yrs old at the time) to register my birth.
My Mum felt that if my dad forgot what I was to be called, my brother would remember but no.
Neither of them could remember so they chose a name between them.
Fortunately, my Mum liked the name they had chosen, so she let them off.
As the third born and very much the youngest, I often felt bad that I wasn't named after anyone. Not after mum, dad, grandparents...that I ever knew of.
I was told that there had been 3 choices of name...Maureen, Priscilla (what WERE they thinking of???), and Virginia. I got the name of the state...or tobacco here, with Lee as my middle name. Maybe because dad was from a southern state. As a teenager, my name got mangled by rude boys. There was never a nick name...I'd murder anyone who tried to call me Ginny. A cousin was...she was welcome to it!

Some great tales and comments here, thank you all.

My crown has been refitted. Lovely dentist. Great sense of humour.
Had to call at The Holy Well on the way home to wet the baby's head and test the crown.
The men were delighted to find out that one of our talented village artists had carved, from a fallen tree, a life sized naked lady holding a salmon and he was bringing her in for a pint. She was great fun. Took the men's minds off the football for quite some time. :-)
gness, I bet your locals loved Ella.....

Why would they, DT? Not that I've heard of any cases in the village.

The name Anthony reminded me of new neighbours many years ago.
I just couldn't work out, from speaking to people, if the chap was called Anthony or Andrew.
A workman in my house knew him so I asked about the name.
Ahhh...he said. His name's Anthony but we all call him Andy for short.??????
