If the existence of the earth was condensed into 24 hours, humans appeared about 75 seconds before midnight. Intelligent society about 2 seconds before midnight. We have figures for at best 250 years. How arrogant are we to assume we can make any predictions based on such a small amount of data?
I think he’s right. I’ve always thought it arrogant of man to even consider that he can succeed in combatting nature. At the very best all he can do is delay the inevitable…. in my opinion.
As demonstrated a few weeks ago in Turkey the Earth does its own thing. There are supervolcanoes due any time on planetary time scales could be in 1000 years or tomorrow. Huge swathes of North America are due to be lava. There are others. The magnetic poles are predicted to switch, a new Storegga is due. Krakatoa has been erupting since 1883...etc etc. If mankind can cut all carbon emissions for the 4% of the carbon we control it will make zero difference. The largest emitter of carbon is the oceans that cover 71% of the surface of the earth. So we are going to fix all that with some windmills! Right oh! If it is "too late" it's burger all to do with mankind.
Ah, if it's too late no point in being a fanatic about it then. It's good to recognise the things we can not change. Let's all party while it still lasts.
I remember a geo scientist on tv commenting on disasters of all kinds, earthquakes, asteroids, drought, floods, storms, volcanoes, tsunamis etc "Just because we are here now doesn't mean they wont happen!".
