Note:

"A free kick can be taken by lifting the ball with a foot or both feet simultaneously."
The ball need only clearly move for it to be in play now.

Thats why at some corners, defenders have thought the kick had to be re-taken because the ball had been touched but not left the quadrant so they weren't paying attention as the other team carried on.
Balls! the ball has to be dead before a free-kick can be taken by the FA... rules. Personally I think the actual goal should stand.
In a free-kick, the ball IS dead until it is touched and clearly moves.
TCL and TTT, it appears you are right if this article is correct.

It confirms the method was banned shortly afterwards, but adds it is legal again now. I wonder why no one is doing it.
