Dear all, I am doing some [more] family research and have got the birth certificate of one of my family - born in 1863 in Largs (Ayrshire) but I cannot read/decipher the birthplace - I can make a stab at it and have done a quick lookup on maps but to no avail. Therefore, does anyone in the Largs/Skelmorlie/etc area know if there was/is an area of Largs called Hallis Land (???) or similar, so that I can figure out where she was born exactly. The actual location is written as [Hallis Land]? Post Office - strange place to give birth !!!! Many thanks

Hailey?

People usually gave birth at home, so if they lived over the PO it would be normal.
Checking older maps might be a better idea.

Also is it possible that it is **** Island?

Can you post a snip of that word - the more eyes the better.
Back in 1863 most births would have been at home. In Scotland "Lands" are usually alleys or squares off a main road. Not sure if this helps.

Hall's Land? (although I might have expected land to have a capital L) -adjacent to or behind the Post Office, which can be seen on Main Street in the 1850s 25inch map

Pure speculation

A land was a group of dwellings or tenements under the one roof and having a common entry (according to Chambers)
