Red Radiators.

Hi, How on earth do you get rid of red paint on radiators! I am trying without success to eradicate red painted radiators, no matter how many coats of white gloss I apply it slowly but surely goes to a very light pink - please somebody help me!

Try applying an oil based primer before the the coat of gloss goes on it should stop the strong pigment of the red bleeding through to your new white gloss.
Anyone else got any suggestions ???

We got rid of red paint by painting something black first (don't laugh), then painting it white. It worked for us but no guarantees, it seemed to stop the red "bleeding through" somehow ( matt black).Hope this helps.

I've had success using aluminium primer on walnut-colour stained doors prior to repainting them white. Don't know about red though.

After removing the radiator I used paint stripper on them first, cleaned that off then primer and finally the last coat of radiator enamel.

If you use an oilbased eggshell paint as an undercoat it will cover most dark shades. This is because it has a higher opaciaty then gloss (more white pigment to thinners) You can use it as a top coat if you wish but will get a satin rather than gloss finish. I prefer this but not to everyones taste. The make that I would favour in eggshell is Permaglaze available in good trade painting and decorating suppliers.

Oh don't forget to lightly abrade to provide a key for each layer of paint especially after gloss.
