Spam and phishing are email-related security issues, nothing to do with the browser. Your email service provider (for example, hotmail, yahoo, or if you use outlook express your internet service provider instead.)

Mozilla firefox is a lot more secure than IE anyway.

I do have Outlook Express and was under the impression as this is produced by Microsoft that it came bundled with Internet Explorer and therefore updated at the same time

ie Is it possible to have Internet Explorer supplied without Outlook Express being supplied. I know you can change your browser or your e-mail to something else.
If you open Outlook Express and in the Help menu select "About" you should be able to see what version you are using.

I would assume the later versions are more secure but for a safe level of security you really need to be using virus protection software such as Norton Antivirus.
IE7 does come with extra phishing protection, and is more secure than IE6. But you should hope so, since it's been 5 years since IE6 first came out.

As simsfreq points out though, firefox is still better than IE7 at this sort of thing, and likely will be for a while. Use it in conjunction with Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express for your email, and you'll be under even better protection.
