So many people seem unable to and I never understand why. Is it just a matter of confidence?

My mum was a distance swimmer so I think I could swim before I could walk. Like my mum I was a distance rather than a speed swimmer although I was my school's junior champion in the dim and distant past. All my family are swimmers and wee Daniel (great-grandson of 5 months) has already been in the pool with his mum and dad.

no I can't swim.

put me in a pool and I'll sink like a stone
Just found the name of a film I couldn't recall, doh.

Finding Your Feet, in which Celia Imrie enjoyed early morning river swimming. A bit too brrrrr for me.
I can't, although did have lessons at school. I realise I have missed out on so much. I made sure my son could swim from an early age.
I can’t swim. We had lessons at school but I didn’t get beyond splashing at the side with a polystyrene float. I gradually dodged the lessons whenever possible and haven’t been in the water since.
Mayup, you don't what you're missing. Have another go with proper swimming lessons. You won't regret it.
I can swim, but not a strong swimmer. Went swimming in open air pool last Friday. Only in for 20-25 minutes, and my arm muscles were really aching. Probably because I haven't been for a while.
SharonA - I can’t even put my head under in the shower. It gives me ear ache just thinking about it! And as for wearing a costume….
I can swim, but never particularly enjoyed it or was particularly good at it. I dislike the whole process of stripping-off, climbing into a costume in an inhospitable cubicle and then making my way to the pool (which is always cold). If there were no more than 2 or 3 others there it would be OK - but you can't move sometimes and get splashed in the face, which I hate.
Having said that, before lockdown I had been going swimming regularly for a year and managed to swim half a mile - it helped my spine which is a bit damaged. I can't raise the enthusiasm to do it all over again and it has become much more expensive.
Jourdain, some councils & pools offer reduced rates depending on age & timing.
Never underestimate the water, however well you may swim :(

Yes, i can swim. I think it important we can all do it because of the dangers of water.
Never been able to swim. I dont seem to have the co-ordination for it
Is ability to swim anything to do with body types? When in Uganda I learnt that ,despite it being a hot country, very few of the local population could swim. For reasons not entirely clear, Black people are often less good at swimming than White people, while the reverse is often true with running
