Given that teachers only work for 9-and-a-bit months each year anyway, that clearly left quite some scope for abuse of the system.
We had an English teacher who seemed to spend exactly 6 months in total off sick every year, on the grounds of 'stress', before she finally left for another job (no doubt with an excellent reference too, just to get rid of her!)
