The first first Police force was founded by Robert Peel. Giving rise instantly to 2 nicknames for Policemen, Peelers and Bobbies. Fun fact their first HQ was 4 Whitehall place, the rear of which openned into a courtyard called Scotland Yard, hence the current name of the Met HQ.

Lots of nicknames for them now;

 

Old Bill, Master William, Pigs, Bizzies, Rozzers, Bluebottles, Coppers, Filth, Fuzz, Plod, Ducks and Geese. Probably some i haven't yet heard.

Thames Police was inaugerated in the 1700s and predated Roert Peels Met so is actually the first organised Police organisation in the country. Later the Thames Police was taken over by the Met.

Met Traffic Division were known within the force as 'Black Rats' by their foot duty counterparts.

Mounted Branch are known as 'Donkey Wallopers'

 

Legend has it that Old Bill was an avuncular officer much liked by East enders.

Plod really is about a police officers gait . They plod along on their beat for nearly 8 hours in a slow way.

My old china has nothing to do with the polic. It is cockney rhyming slang My old china plate  (Mate)

Peel crossed the benches in the Commons, leaving the Conservatives to join the Whigs (Liberals).

I had a mate in the army who used the term 'Old Bill' almost everytime he mentioned the police. But if he was talking about a very young copper, he'd say " Master William".
