I recently took some waste mixed earth and gravel  to the local recycling centre expecting to pay to get rid of it, but i  was told that the earth and stones should be segregated and i will have to pay about £9. My opinion is that if recycling was free they would get more done and probably be less fly tipping. Opinions please.

Why is tax paid on rubbish? If you need to get rid of some rubbish, taxing it doesn't make you suddenly make you not need to get rid of it. It's just another rip off money making scheme.

Recycling is free but you need to sort it or else they have to sort it and that takes time which costs money!

MOST recycling is free but here in West Berkshire you are charged for ceramics, plasterboard, tyres etc.

bhg481, same here in Devon and we get charged for soil and rubble it was £1 a bag last time I had to use the facility and you can't get much rubble in a bag and still be able to lift it.

It's not completely free here either.  I agree with you William.  Rather than pay some people will just dump their rubbish.

At last house I had to dispose of an 0ld boiler. Gasman said it could contain  Asbestos, so I dug a very deep hole at bottom of garden and buried it.

Job Done :-)

Ah, the nuclear option.

They don't give a darn if someone fly tips on your land. Nor do they care if you take things to be recycled or not. It looks good to be running a centre, profitable to be charging you rates, and also finding excuses to charge you more.

People dumping stuff makes me mad.  They have to put it in a car to take it to wherever they're going to dump it so why not take it to the tip - and cost isn't the only reason.   I saw an old fridge dumped by the bottle bank at tescos a little while ago.  No reason for that whatsoever.

Recycling centres or otherwise known as the Tip, are run by councils. Unfortunately our council Tax is collected by central government, so I understand. Then allocated to said council. Therefore the council has to subsidise recycling centres accordingly. So inevitably we will pay twice for something that should be, but isn't included in our taxation. Fly tipping, though execrable will occur because many cannot, or will not pay twice for disposing of their rubbish. Council should maybe  negotiate a better response from government.

I use my local recycling centre fairly regularly, disposing of everything from rubble to small electrical goods.  I've never had to pay.  I do know that if you have a van then you need to pay for a permit as it's assumed you are being paid for disposing of people's rubbish.

Naomi, I am with you on that. The lanes round here are frequently used for fly tipping. Most of the stuff dumped can be dumped for free at the local recycling facility. Makes my blood boil. I do not understand the mentality of people who will drive down a pretty country lane and then dump a mattress, fridge and bags of stuff.

I've never had to pay at our tip.

You can pay £23 for a kerbside collection of up to 3 bulky items, which i think is a bargain.

So do I bm.

B&H charge a minimum of £60 for up to 3 items.  Each extra item is charged at £12 per item and white goods are £45 per item.

Extortionate Council tax, why should we have to pay to dump stuff at the tip?

Perhaps income council tax doesn't cover the cost of disposing of all the rubbish.  I suppose they could offer a totally free service if they raised it.

The problem is tax.  Tax has to be paid on rubbish hence the huge cost of skips. And this can get more depending on wht you are dumping.  Plasterboard now needs its own skip and costs more, any electrical the same. And then of course we get to the nasty stuff like asbestos and oil - and fridges.

And this is why developers dont want to develop brownfield sites.

Why is tax paid on rubbish? If you need to get rid of some rubbish, taxing it doesn't make you suddenly make you not need to get rid of it. It's just another rip off money making scheme.

Dave, have you read the answer before yours?
