I've got a picture I want to crop right round so there is no white around it (if this makes sense)and paste it into the same document overlapping the original picture. but I can only seem to crop in a square or a round shape.

Is there any way I can do this, I have a couple of diffrent photo editing softwares, or can anybody reccomend a software that will allow mw to do this?

Thanks
Toni

You can do it easily with gimpshop:

Use the 'magic wand' to select the white and then 'invert selection' so that everything except the white is selected and choose 'copy'.

Alternatively, use the freehand 'lasoo' tool to make your selection.
Are you importing the picture into a Word document
