Could anyone recommend a good woodwork paint, for  internal doors and skirting, I'm not very keen on gloss

You have a choice between oil-based and water-based (I'd go for water-based, as you can thin it or clean the brushes with water instead of white spirit, so it doesn't stink and it also dries more quickly).

You can choose between gloss, silk, satin or matt.

Agree with Atheist - we like water-based because of the lack of smell.

We've just had a brilliant decorator in, he always uses johnstones paints (I think that's how you spell it) and all the skirtings and radiators have been done in their eggshell finish. Looks great and is glossier than I thought it would be, but not glossy, if that makes sense. I'd recommend it.

Eggshell shouldn't be glossy, it should be more like an egg shell. Did you have oil or water-based paint?

Water based I assume, it barely smells. It's not glossy as such,just has a nice sheen to it but I was expecting it to be dull. It was the decorator who suggested that finish, he said it's more 'modern' these days. It does look very, very nice I have to say.

I think a bit of a sheen means that it is easier to keep clean as it can be wiped down if necessary whereas matt seems to keep stains and dirt.

I usually use Dulux Satinwood.

This is how it compares...

Eggshell:  low-sheen

Satinwood:  mid-sheen

Gloss :  full-sheen

They're all wipeable/washable.
