I'd rather queue for half an hour for a self-service till than go to a staffed one!I much prefer machines to people and I find it easier to pack my bags when it's me that chooses the order that my purchases get scanned in, rather than a check-out operator.  (e.g. if I'm doing the scanning myself, I'll put all of the frozen and chilled items through together, so that...

o that is OK then, the rest of us cant

OR

you clearly dont go often enough ! hur hur hur

I can use the self checkouts ok - they seem quite good at Aldi but I found the Asda ones more finnicky - and Asda usually has long queues at the manned checkouts.

Basically I make a quick assessment of which is going to be fastest & go there.

Morrisons is annoying - older staff who seem to want to spend time chatting with the customer rather than getting on with the scanning.

when it's me that chooses the order that my purchases get scanned in,

you spend TIME deciding on the order of scan

I dont: I always knew ( coz people on AB tell me on a daily basis) that I am weird

dizmo: "At Sainsbury's you can Smart Shop (as has already been mentioned), so everything is scanned and bagged as you go around the shop." - don't overload the Luddites diz, they haven't got the hang of self service Jack and Jills yet!

You can do the same as Tesco, scan and bag as you shop

They're a good place to get rid of loose change.

I have found that self scaning is OK but there is usually things that don't scan. I just scan and put everything back in the trolley and pack out side the store. Far less stressful. The payment can be difficult at times and staff have to interven. My system works for me. Also they rearrange the shelves so you get to see the wrong goods and have to hunt the store to find what you went in for. Apart from that a happy shopper. I'm lucky to have alternative shops so just go somewhere else for the missing items.

Davebro.  I get my laundry done for me, picked up on a Monday evening, delivered back on Thursday evening washed, dried, and ironed.

I was fed up of doing it myself and on the off chance I googled for a launderers in my area and hit the jackpot.  Try googling the same for your area you might just be lucky.

"Not klnocking but that is a lot of the problem "

Not with me it isn't :-) I have found though that long queues are generally caused by a shortage of tolls and the fact most people prefer not to use SS for really large amounts.

I always put my things out in order Btw :-)

My wife just refuses to use self check out. She says they are doing staff out of jobs. I will use self checkouts if I only have a basket load but get frustrated often by standing by the checkout with my arm up, like a schoolboy dying for a pee, to get my alcohol approved. Even worse when I am told there is something in the bagging area that I haven't put there and have to wait for one nattering staff member to clear the problem. I have noticed in Sainsbury's each self service checkout has the customer recorded on Camera whilst you scan the items.

Regarding Smart Shop at Sainsburys, I'm surprised I don't see many using it.

I get weekly special offers for both extra points and lower prices on frequently bought items. The offers are available both In-store and online.

If only everyone did that Ich, sadly in my experience they dont.

Still, surely the best way forward is a mix, surely no one wants to go back to the days of waiting behind a queue of trolleys to buy you lunch time meal deal?

I suppose some Spanish supermarkets are behind the times, eg Carrefour, they havent got SS tills yet. You just have to join one big queue and wait your turn.

I like the continental idea where fruit & veg is sold loose so you bag, weigh & price however much you want. Often pre-packaged is too much for me.

davebro, I read somewhere that M&S were trying to encourage this - I've been doing it more often at my local shop. I suspect it will lead to more people squeezing avocados to a pulp, though.

After reading this I am so glad I have my groceries delivered.

I prefer to pick what I want, ladybirder; I don't usually buy food or clothes online, though I'm okay with books and DVDs.

You never know what you might get when you leave it to others

jno, I've had all my groceries delivered weekly ever since the start of Covid and have not had a single problem with substitions.  The subs I have had have worked in my favour.  A good example is when shoulders of lamb were on an half price offer.  I ordered 6 and they were substituted with whole legs of lamb for the same price - around £5 or £6 each, they were priced up between £15 and £24. That wouldn't have happened had I gone to the supermarket.  Ordered a litre of Bell's whisky for a Christmas present, subbed with 2x75cl bottles.

I've read lots of horror stories about on-line deliveries, I've also read lots of horror stories about shopping in store, too.
