With the announcement that Farage will not contest a seat in the forthcoming election and my view that he would treat the offer of a seat on the red benches with the scorn it deserves how can our society thank him for his service?

The thought came to me this morning that we might erect a statue, a giant statue, in his honour.  It would straddle the entrance to the port of Dover and look towards the continent.  One hand would be raised and two fingers extended in a Churchillian gesture.

How does one set about petitioning parliament?

This would be an undertaking so costly it would require government funding.

Would you sign it to help get the ball rolling?

No

haven't you got better things to occupy your time/mind?

No, not really.

But there are some here who hold him in higher esteem than TGM and TGL.

The petition could take off.

What, than commenting on here? Whoops! 🤣

I'm surprised and saddened that this proposal has attracted so few comments.

We could erect a monument which would be a source of awe and wonder for generations to come.

No.  I can think of many more deserving than this man.  However, I am against statues in any shape or form.  One/two generations on they are meaningless.

One of two folk here dont do irony plainly

I love statues - solid symbols of history.  I never pass by one without taking the time to stop and read.  Sadly I suspect your petition won't get far though, sandyRoe - as valiant and patriotic as your effort is. 🙄

maggie: "However, I am against statues in any shape or form.  One/two generations on they are meaningless." - there are thousands some going back many hundreds of years, how are they meaningless?

what about this one?

Heaven forbid...... Maybe carve our Greatest leaders into the Seven sisters  Mount Rushmore style.... Coastal erosion will deal with them over time....

By "meaningless" TTT I mean that very few know or care about the people depicted.  Sad to say my own grandchildren know very little about the statues in their own city. Unless we teach them they will remain ignorant.

surely the statues help in the teaching.

We have a statue of the Fair Maid of Perth sitting on a bench on the High Street.

Not long after she arrived a very drunk colleague tried to start a conversation with her.

If Cities can allow statues to little dogs, I'm sure one of Nigel would be acceptable. However in these cash stricken times, raising two fingers might be too costly, I suggest one would suffice.

^There you go, sandyRoe.  The best suggestion so far - and cur price.  😂

*cut price.

I get some of my best ideas early in the morning while sitting in the smallest room.

I think this was a good one, but before its time.
