To commemorate the anniversary of D-Day, the sports club my husband chairs which does a lot for local charities bought a silhouette soldier for the village.  A little ceremony was held and the figure was placed among the graves in the ancient churchyard.   Someone stole it.

Words fail me.

People will steal things simply because they are there.

No thought about the use or practicality, because when you are a thief, you are immune to normal thoughts and morals.

I would have hoped that something like that would be pretty much sacrosanct to normal people.

It is, to normal people Naomi, but those who do things like this I wouldn't call normal.

Surely in a village you must have an inkling of who half inched it?

Probably some drunk unless you have some anti British person in your midst.

What was it made of?

"I would have hoped that something like that would be pretty much sacrosanct to normal people."

People who commit such crimes are not normal people, naomi. They are feral beings with no sanctities. It is estimated that more than 80% of low level acquisitive crime is comitted to fuel drug addiction. This creature's only thought would be that it could be flogged for a few quid towards their next fix. Equally disturbing is the fact that another creature would actually buy it from him.

If it is a small village then most likely to be the village drunk or a group of teens having a jolly good jape.

Or the village idiot, and we al know what they are like.

If it was metal, probably stolen to be weighed in. Remember a few years ago when some bronze panels were stolen fom the Plymouth Naval Memorial? The thieves were caught and the panels replaced, but they said they were going to cut themup and weigh them in.

Unfortunately this lack of respect isn't a new thing. I remember as a child admiring a beautiful model of a sailing ship on a sailors grave in my local churchyard. The ship towed a small rowing boat which was stolen and a replica was made and cemented into place. A few months later both the ship and boat were stolen.

YMB, it was metal.

Probably as 10C says.  You dont live near or on the way to Applby do you?

People who prefer a home to have wheels have a penchant for metal.

This is the world we live in, sadly.

It is disgraceful, I hope they are caught.

Damn savages....etc

Question Author

I can only hope that it has been taken in some sort of misguided prank.

And that it will be returned (probably anonymously) when the thief comes to his/her senses.

A lovely thing for your sports club to have done.

I hope it was reported to your local paper as one of its readers might have seen it.
