Where's Science Gone ?!!!!!

Why have we been merged with Tecnology??

And why does Tecnology come before Science?

We're now going to be inundated with questions about why people's DVD burner won't work and where have all their i-tunes gone when they tried to upload to their i-pod thingies.

Not happy.

brachiopod: Look there, there are some subcategories in there...
Question Author
Oh hang on.... there's sub-categories.

Does that mean that under Report This Answer there will be a new 'reason' of
" - In the wrong bleeding Sub-Category yet again" ?
Question Author
Sorry, JjP - cross-post.

But yes, yes, I see them.
(*raises hand to eyes and peers intently*)

Coo, aren't they strange?
I agree 100%

s should come before t and what's with all this sub-category nonsense. science was a perfectly respectable category in its own right. damn you answerbank, damn you straight to hell (metaphorically of course because hell doesn't exist)

Agreed, Dawkins, me old mucker.

Is it a case of evolving too fast?

AB is trying to run before it's nektonic, if you ask me.....
<Peers over the Top>

I'm not sure I like what's happened to science... I've only just started using it and gotten over my fear that all the brainy people will laugh at me if I ask a stupid question.

Now I've got three other categories where I could potentially get laughed at....

Hmmmm.....

Don't worry, China Doll, come on in - just mind those racks of bubbling test-tubes over there....

Right, let me clear that remote electro-convulsive-trans-mogrification device off this dusty old armchair, and you can have a sit down.

Oh hang on, that's not a remote electro-convulsive-trans-mogrification device - that's my sandwiches.

Anyway - sit down, sit down - what did you want to ask?

Well Brachi, a lot of my questions tend to be only 'sort of scientific' in the sense that someone will tell me something and I'll want to know more (time travel/stars thing you ansered is a good eg.) Or I'll be reading something and just wonder what the scientific take on it is.

For example, I just finished reading Day of the Triffords and thought that was excellent but they made mention to possible weapons in space biological and the one that caused the blindness. Now I find all that highly unlikely but actually is it likely? Could it happen? (Not the walking plant bit obviously).

Then there's the phillosophical stuff. A lot of things I've read lately suggest that science is actually a kind of phillosophy, people start with an abstract idea and then disprove it or prove it? So is science abstract?

And don't even get me started on Leonard Da Vinci and whether he was an artist or a scientist?!

Now are you sure I'm allowed to stay in Science Brachi? Or should I get me coat?
Question Author
Get your coat, China Doll....

.... your Lab coat, that is. You'll need it if you're going to hang around here for any length of time! And I hope you do.

The Day of The Triffids is one of my favourite books. From what I remember, when they are discussing the cause of the blindness and the sicknesses, Bill Masen supposes that they could be caused by 'weapons satellites' being caused to malfunction by the meteor shower.

The book is written in the 'first person', from Bill's viewpoint, so his explanation is a reasonable interpretation of the events, bearing in mind the situation. However, he has a reasonably scientific mind (albeit, in the bio-sciences), so his supposition makes sense.

In real life, communications satellites etc. are beaming electro-magnetic waves over large areas of the planet, that is true. So if there was a certain frequency of electro-magnetic wave (not necessarily visible light) that could 'burn out' the retina in the eye, and it could be transmitted in a sufficiently concentrated 'beam' - then I don't see why it should not be possible. Like Bill, however, I don't have enough knowledge in that particular field.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, could you pass me that round-bottomed flask of tea from over there?
< Borrows white coat from corner of room and passes flask to Brachi >

Can I add a little something extra in to the flask Brach? You can take the girl out of B&S but I'm still bringing my portable bar with me!

Day of Triffords is excellent although I'm never lookinig at my venus fly trap in the same way again.... I thought that the film (book?) 28 Days Later borrowed a lot from it in its own way.

So what is your area of expertise then? It might help narrow down my questions a little!

And did science start off as a phillosophy or at the very least an abstract idea? Having read a teeny tiny bit about how the human species acquired knowledge it seems that way to me. And then there's maths.... that can be really abstract!

Perhaps I should suggest to the AB Ed that I have my own sub category under science for 'China's Wonderings' ?!
