TV is completely hopeless now, so I need to get a new one. My mind is blown with all the different types, so I wondered if anyone would like to find one? Argos or Amazon etc. around 40", Freeview, perhaps controlled by Alexa, Would be great to have a DVD hole, but I know they don't really do them anymore. Everything else is above my head!

How much do you want to spend? Amazon and Argos are not necessarily the best place to buy, the last TV I bought was far cheaper at Currys, I was surprised. Richer Sounds is another good outlet, John Lewis is worth doing a price comparison because of their often superior warranty

Here is a 40", full HD, Freeview tv that works with Alexa and has a DVD slot. £170

Richer Sounds has many, many fans among AB members.  This is what I'd go for (based upon what you've written) from their current range.  (You could simply add on a cheap DVD player, if needed):

The telly in Barry's link is certainly well worth considering.  The problem with the Bush 'brand' though is that it isn't really a 'proper' brand at all.

Bush used to be a well-respected UK company but, upon its demise, Argos bought the right to use the name on lots of differents products, all of which are made by different companies.

So you don't really know who makes any particular product.  It could come from a manufacturer with excellent quality control standards or it might come from another manufacturer where less care is taken in ensuring that everything is just as it should be.

I agree about the Bush brand, which is a badge that Argos owns and slaps on goods from any manufacturer but the reviews seem good and the returns policy is reliable if you don't like it.

Thanks All, and thank you Barry – that looks absolutely brilliant!

I would put a whole English pound coin on the Bush TV being made by Vestel, they make JVC, Toshiba, Hitachi, Polaroid, Albi as well as Bush and a host of others

If you buy it, let us know what you think. I might be looking for a similar TV for a Christmas present

there are many TVs out there - the only consolation is that if anything is wrong Argos take theirs back willingly.

I do have a 32" TV in my backroom not being used with a DVD attached to the side of it - it's doing no good sitting there but I've said my bit Argos for me

Have a look at Euronics - they are made up of independent companies.

You wont go wrong with a Samsung. Very reliable and easy to use and set up. Avoid ASrgos and Currys.

Look at John Lewis, Richer Sounds and Amazon

So we're agreed, Argos are great, and rubbish. 🙄

I'd go for either Samsung or LG (both of which I have) from either Richer Sounds or John Lewis and avoid both Argos and particularly Currys.
