Thanks, johnpiper, NACW, I guessed the Unclueds quite early in the game, then the hints from jj109 confirmed my answers. A nice offering from Doc rhis week and enjoyable, too!

a million thanks jj and nac for all your help with the cipher in Genius, now I'm only struggling with a sticky patch in the southeast - I think my downs are syntax a jazzer and a homily, but I never understood the miles kane thing so I don't know what to alter for 20 across, and I can't see the misprints in 8 and 19 down though I think my answers are right

Thanks, Quinol.  20 Across is Marry, get together. The M s the abbreviation for Miles and Harry (Kane, the footballer) loses his H, husband.

To answer Maxxer's query, the quotation mentions brown hills. Brown hills is one of the smaller towns forming part of the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall.

That was typed correctly as Brownhills, but this machine thought it knew better.
