how did that originate? excise duty perhaps and probably way before Alex or Nicola could dream up this way of taxation....?

I think it stems from way back and is the cost of a barrel or something. It is related to duty because stronger beers had greater duty attached.

It was the tax due on a hogshead (fifty-four gallon) of beer and represented the relative strengths of the beers.

90/- for an ale ?

Give over !

It was tax on fifty-four gallon, not a pint.

"90/- for an ale ?

Give over !"

Amazingly, OG, unless you're in Wetherspoons, you'd be lucky to get a pint of "Ninety Shillings" for ninety shillings today - certainly where I live, anyway,

I was never taught 'old money' in school and its totally alien to me.  I was only in infant school at the time.

We were taught all about the metric system and not the imperial measurement.

I still use pounds, ounces, miles, yards etc.   It is easier.

It has only been about fifty years since it all changed.😂

do we not have any yorkshiremen on here?

I'll take a guess TW "how you doing mate"

Sam 1960 thanks for replying. I have no idea what it means.

TheWinner --  OK......'OW MUCH!'

In French that translates to 'COMBIEN' - which several outraged Yorkshiremen (of my pupillage) were heard to utter regularly

I'll have to leave it for tonight.

Never heard of it, TW 🤷

This was all I could find jo
