I don't care that he's a republican but if he is prepared to compromise his own beliefs by falsely swearing allegiance to the sovereign just to get into parliament he clearly has no moral compass. What else is hidden beneath that slimey exterior?

I don’t know about poor -  and  I imagine very few poor people stand for Parliament anyway  - but I doubt Catholics or Muslims have a particular objection to swearing or affirming allegiance to the Crown.

There is, youngmaf. MPs can take an “affirmation” which is what I believe Mr Lewis did. His objection was that he had to affirm his allegiance to the Crown.

The UK has a Constitutional Monarchy. Anybody wishing to get that changed should lobby their MP. If elected as an MP a Republican must swear or affirm allegiance to the Crown. To do so “under protest” – especially when standing on the ticket of a party which has made no mention of challenging that institution – is disingenuous.

One shouldn't expect to have to swear allegiance to a member of a royal family, but to the nation.

 

If Starmer threw out all the eejits would there be any politicians left in the House ?

NJ, refusing to take the Oath would not result in a by-election as demonstrated by Sinn Féin MPs who have not taken an oath to the Crown but were/are MPs still.

Your own Saint Nigel took a position in the EU government despite believing it shouldn't exist, so he could work to bring it down.

Similarly, this bloke isn't going to achieve his aim of abolishing the monarchy by staying out of parliament.

I'm reasonably local to Norwich and although Lewis is fairly popular in his constituency, it's very localised. Being a Corbynite he's not so popular in the wider community, nor with businesses. 
It's OK for him to be a republican, but if he stands as an MP he could find a more gracious way of displaying his opinions.
His childish protest is actually his response to not being offered a job in the cabinet.
