This isn't really a question, more a word of warning.

I was given a One4All gift card for Christmas last year, and it almost got forgotten about until I was sorting out my wallet.

Its not a fortune, there is £20 on it, but I thought great theres something I wanted to buy in my local ASDA store.

Not so great news when I got to ASDA as non of the supermarkets accept the One4All gift cards as payment for anything.

So I rang the contact number on the back of the One4All gift card, and they said the only supermarket that recognised a One4All gift card is Marks & Spencer. But theres nothing I want or need at Marks & Spencer.

So word of warning is think before you give someone a One4All gift card, because its not what it says on the card, its very misleading, as its not one card for all at all.

So now I'm more or less forced to use it in shops I don't normally buy things from but put the rest of the money to an item.

I can't even use it in HMV, which would be my next go to shop.

So in short, One4All gift cards don't cater for ALL shops at all!!

I agree with renegade - we let Marketing get away with too much misleading material.  Unless a lot of us cry stop (like renegade) then it will slowly get worse. Don't say you weren't warned.

Poetic license we think.

I always read the terms and conditions of gift cards, discounts, coupons and so on.

Every store coupon/discount will have exceptions - they usually can't be used for tobacco products, fuel, lottery tickets etc.

"Either they should ban the cards or add the shops they have clearly not added."

You expect them either to go out of business or spend money on adding every single business to their list and every single business making any required changes to allow them to accept the cards?

They could do that or they could just carry on doing what they're already doing and expect folk to check the terms and conditions for using the card.

Businesses have to pay banks to count their cash because it uses the banks' time and resources to do so.

Would you be okay with businesses charging a lower price for goods or services when purchased by card?

THECORBYLOON,

Well how did we manage in the past?

There is also a annual fee taken from the card if its not used - so try not to have any money sitting unused on it.

There are sites where you can sell unwanted gift cards.  I've never used it, but found this with a quick Google search.

https://cards2cash.co.uk

"Well how did we manage in the past? " We did fine at various stages in history but I doubt Currys would be interested in selling a 60" TV to me in exchange for a dairy cow.

Personally I'd put the voucher towards a one-slice toaster to avoid the inevitable when some expert tries to disable one slot on my current one.

Haven't read all the thread, so i don't know if this has been suggested. Find someone who is a regular at M&S and sell it to them for £15. It's a win/win situation.

all our Chinese round where I live - have big posters on their windows - CASH ONLY

takeaways

If cash is no longer a cost effective option for a lot of businesses, then those businesses seem not to have found a decent business opportunity, They should go to the wall and get replaced by those who have.

JinnyJoan,

Same here, all the Chinese restaurants or take aways are cash only.

I tend to think they do that to not declare all their earnings and cheat the taxman, I can't think why else they don't except card payments.

Its our leisure center near here I can't understand why is card payments only. They have a cafe inside but there was this occasion the whole place was in chaos because their internet was down, and noone could buy anything or do any transactions as they refuse to accept cash.

So they we're victims of their own stupidity.

If I had my own shop I would not accept cash. I would make it clear to prospective till robbers that there is no cash on the premises.  I wouldn't want to be robbed in the shop nor mugged taking the cash to the bank.

I find it hard to believe your local takeaways are cash only.  Don't they accept orders via JustEat, Deliveroo etc that are card only transactions?

We have takeaways here that operate cash only if you are collecting, but you also get a nice discount for that.

They still take card online or orders vis food delivery apps though. I can;t see how hey could sustain a cash only service

barry1010,

Uber eats, or Deliveroo dont deliver to our area anyway. We are in a very rural area and we live too many miles from the shops.

Most of the Chinese takeaways do have their own delivery drivers, and will deliver to my property, but based on miles they add a 2 or 3 pounds onto the food. And it has to be cash only.

Even the big brands like Macdonalds or KFC that use uber eats etc won't deliver to my house or village.

barry1010,

But when the system is down it can put a strangle hold on your business if you refuse cash.  I have witnessed this many times.

Even our local ASDA was once thrown into chaos at the tils because the customers couldn't pay for their goods, and was asked to go and draw money out of the cash machines.

That's happened once in how many years?
