You sure it's closed? I can't see anything about it here

For the second time in one evening, I find myself in the unusual position of agreeing with Norman ;-)
The National Rail Museum is great fun for all ages:

The Model Railway (next to the station) is also quite popular with children:

As well as looking at trains, why not travel on one? There's an hourly direct service to Halifax. (Journey time about 1 hours. Adult return fare 10.40). Why Halifax? Because, right next to the station, you'll find Yorkshire's star attraction for youngsters, Eureka!

Where did you get the information which suggests that Jorvik closes at the end of October? I suspect that it may have been from the York tourism site:
http://www.visityork.org
That site certainly refers to the 'season' ending at the end of this month but it doesn't seem to tie in with what the Jorvik website says:

There's no reference to a season' but there is advice to the effect that 'times may vary over Christmas'. That seems to suggest that Jorvik is open all year round. For definitive information, phone the centre on 01904 543400.

The Castle Museum is good as well

I don't think the website does it justice to be honest! It has 2 or 3 mock streets which have lots to see, as well as seeing the prison cell which held Dick Turpin, and I think there is an exhibition of household 'gadgets' through the ages - it was certainly there when we last went and our kids liked seeing the old hoovers etc.

I agree the Railway Museum is great, didnt want to go but once in there had a great time, and the street where you can shake hands across the upstairs windows on opposite sides of the street because its so narrow, why not ask the tourist info to send you some brochures ?
Not the York Dungeon though much too scary for a 6 year old.
Maybe the Viking thing is closing for repairs / would check that out before you go.
I think there are canal boat rides nearby in summer but not sure about Nov.
Have a great time, its a lovely city.

Also on the National Railway Museum site is the Yorkshire Wheel which I went on in May, just after it opened. Well worth the 6. We got 5 'rotations' of the wheel (unlike the London Eye where you get just one).
