The Moon orbits the Earth once every 27.32 days. However, as it returns to the same position relative to the Sun in the sky every 29.53 days or 709 hours. This is the synodic period of the Moon, on which the months of the lunar calendars (e.g. the Islamic calendar) are based. Jewish months are also counted from one new moon to the next.
