No. Nor does the UK have them between its counties (bar the preposterous situation on which the EU insisted must exist between GB and NI). No, I know they are not the same. But the USA is not the EU either. Their histories, evolution and philosophies are somewhat different.
“Is the federal government not a regulatory superpower?”
No. It’s the national government. You could ask the same of the Westminster government but once again it would not be appropriate because the USA is not the UK.
“Is it all about tax rates for you?”
Certainly not (though it’s quite a factor when looking at that comparison). Income tax rates were simply something I chose to compare and contrast the ambitious, forward looking USA which sees personal and corporate wealth as a driver towards prosperity, and the sclerotic, declining EU which views it as something to be controlled and regulated so that it does not become too dominant.
As Tora says, we have nothing in common with most European nations or their people – especially those in the East. Not even a common language. Our only connection with most of them is that we happen to be located on the same part of the globe. If mainland USA was the same distance away from Cornwall and Wales as France is from Kent and Sussex, there would be no question of where I believe our best interests lie.
“…the question does not actually mention the EU.”
No it doesn’t. I introduced it because a number of people were absolutely delighted when the UK was the 28th State of what is certain to become a United States of Europe (if it doesn't disintegrate before that can be achieved). But they seem to recoil in horror when asked what they’d think about being the 51st State of the USA.
Just to summarise, I'd prefer neither of those options, but if it we had to have one or the other, I'd prefer the latter.
