is fred dead?

my son has just told me that the bloke who plays fred elliot in corrie has died.
i told him was mixed up and that the character was dead, not the actor. He insists that's what he's heard.
Anyone know?

I seen that episode of Corrie, actually. Fred's pupils didn't dilate, so I assume he's alive and well!
