Satellite television not working

My Sky subscription has expired. I assumed that I should now just be able to receive all the free channels from my system, but it is not so. I cannot receive any channels from the satellite dish at all. Whenever I press "tv guide" or "text" or "sky" or the button which changes channels, nothing happens.

Should it be like this?

Ask sky about a freesat card. This give you access to all the "free" channels.

Not sure what it costs if you already have the equipment.
