What exactly were foo fighters (not the band) in WW2

I'm a bit hazy about the full story, but I think the idea was that they were the ghosts of Japanese pilots shot down, and they became known as 'foo fighters' which is where Dave Grohl got the name for his perfectly excellent beat combo.
They were what we'd call today, UFOs. Theyw eere given the name by pilots who reported being accompanied or followed by bright lights in the sky that never harmed them but just followed along no matter what they did, until vanishing. Some people say they were reflections distorted by the perspex of their windows, and you can see something like it if you look at an extreme angle through a scratched window of a passenger plane.
