Desktop Calendar...?

I've had a search for a 'Desktop Calendar' (PC type thingy, not a paper one) and I haven't found anything that fits my idea of one, so am wondering if I have been searching for the wrong thing. (A friend tells me there are lots of free ones that will do what I want - but he is now on holiday so I can't ask him.)

Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as... well, a calendar that sits on my desktop permanently? It doesn't have to feed the dogs or paint my nails - it just has to sit there - and 'be' a calendar. BUT, I'd like one (ideally) that was kind of small-and-neat as opposed to a great full-screen thing.

Am I asking too much...?

I like the google calendar - it can be accessed from any computer, and sits nicely on my hidden sidebar ready to open quickly whenever I need it.
