i have an alliance and leicester direct debit card which has a visa logo on it (not visa electron) - will i be able to use it in the us or should i only use travellers cheques?
the best thing to do is ring your bank, they will know exactly where you can & cant use the card. If the answer is no they may be able to exchange the card for one that does work.
If poss take another card as back up just in case.
We were there in July and used our credit cards to buy goods and pay for meals etc. For cash we just used our debit cards to get cash from the cash machines you can't use your debit card to buy things. We had no problems at all. We took a small amount of cash for when we arrived. Enjoy your trip
you van buy a travel money card at the post office which works like a bank card, but is more secure than T Cheques. They cost a 10, then you can load it up with $.
These can be used in any US cash machine or shop that takes Visa. The best bit is, they are chip and pin, but have no details printed on them, so if it's stolen, they can't clean out your bank account. Worth considering.
Was the reason you couldn't use your debit card to buy anything was because you were not FROM the USA? Because I live in Tennessee and I use my Visa debit card to pay in restaurants, supermarkets, Wal-Mart - lots and lots of places.
