we've argued all night about who was the first british women to get to the number one spot in the original top ten, I think it started around 1952, some thought it was winifred atwell, others thought it was petula clark, please help

It was neither of those two, I'm afraid (besides which, Winifred Atwell was from Trinidad). The first British female artist to have a UK number one was Lita Roza, with How Much Is That Doggie In The Window, in April 1953.
