pjwillcox: I don't have access to Polymath 370 and the number of letters were not given. I agree with you that the Berg adder is a SA snake. However there are many others as well so I'm sending nomadmark18 another website and he/she can take choose.

Mark - it would help if you put the number of letters for the clue. I happened to know this one from doing that Polymath.
To OntarioIce - apols, I didn't take on board that you were working blind without the number of letters. Your links are most helpful. I've found, incidentally, that a favourite South African snake for cryptic crossword setters is the boomslang. Regards.
