scar and open wound

I have just had major surgery, which consisted of a large cut being made accross my chest. The wound is still open in places but I have been told this will heal by its self, is this true if so how long will it take

I'm not a health professional, but I underwent a coronary bypass op three years ago. Long scar down the length of the breastbone and a long scar down inside of forearm where the surgeon stole some artery for his repairs. Both were sufficiently healed not to need dressings when I went home after eight days. Fully healed of course takes a little longer.
