Technically, we were supposed to leave our phones at the gatehouse, but I often took mine in - although I always made sure to have it switched off. I worked there for six weeks and only had my bag searched once!
Apart from the obvious problems of prisoners getting hold of them, there was the additional thing that they could interfere with the staff radios at crucial times. Combine the two and you could have a nasty situation.

It is quite easy to get them into some prisons, but not all.
Category A and top security prisons search everyone entering, and they have to pass through detector portals like at an airport.
Open prisons are easy, there'e little to stop you going in, never mind a phone. In between these extremes, it can vary, but be aware that most prisons have scanning detection units that can pinpoint an active phone's location.
Oh, and did I mention that it is illegal, and if caught, you could end up in prison yourself!
