My computer won't turn on, and the green light on the tower is flashing and clicking. What do I do?

First of all hold the on/off button for as long as it takes to turn off.

If after 3 or 4 minutes it still has not turned off, turn it off at the plug.

Wait a minute or two, and switch it back on.

Let us know what happens.

If its got a green light and is flashing, it's not turned off!

I'll assume it was completely turned off and when you turned it on the green light flashed and nothing else happened.

Are all the external leads and connections properly in place - not come loose?

Is the monitor switched on? Does anything come up on the screen?

Is there a disk in your dvd or cd drive?

Or anything odd plugged in by usb?

Is it Windows XP?

Often what seems to happen to me is that the system gets overloaded with static.

I suggest you try this as an opening gambit:

1 Switch off and unplug from the wall

2 Unplug all the leads from the back of the drive (tower).

3 Leave them unplugged for a good few minutes to discharge all the static.

4 Plug everything back in again and try to switch on again

Well I tried, but when I unplugged everything, the light still flashed and then slowly stopped. When I plugged everything back in it was just like before.

Did you wait a while before plugging everything back in?

Is the button jammed?

Have you made sure that the monitor is well plugged in?

Sometimes the leads are pseky blighters and don't sit in correctly.

Do you have a separate on/off switch for the monitor? Is the green light on on the monitor?

Sorry for all the Qs; trying to get a clear picture of what you're doing so far...

Yeah I waited before plugging everything back in.

I`ll check the monitor again but I think it's fine because when I unplug this one cord from the tower and message comes on the screen about checking the connection for that cable or whatever.

The monitor has only one power button and when I turn it on the light turns green then goes to orange.
