We have a wireless router and are having trouble getting a connection to a new laptop. We did have it connected OK two days ago but the following morning the PC would not connect to the internet, so the connections to the broadband set-top box were re-instated. Is there a set procedure? At the moment we have - Settop to PC - to Router - to wireless Laptop. Laptop says connections OK but cannot get internet connection.

It should be modem to router to both computer and laptop.

If your modem (what I think you're calling the set-top box) is USB, then you'll need a modem+router in one, instead of the modem and router separately.
As fo3nix says, you seem to have PC the "wrong" side of the router.

See this diagram here for how it should be setup (scroll down a little bit)

btw, if your desktop is not wireless it can still connect to the router with a cable, but it must be the OUT side on the router, not the IN side.

The only thing going IN to the router should be the MODEM.

See this diagram for how the wired desktop PC should be connected to the router (scroll down a bit) .

Routers and MoDems sometimes get their underwear twisted. What I do is to unplug the ADSL cable, unplug the power supply plug and wait for about a minute. Plug it all back in again and all should be better when the bits have settled down ( about 3 minutes ).

Very many thanks to all of you for your help. Unfortunately, could not acknowledge your excellent help last night as we kept losing the internet on both machines after a few minutes, seems to have settled dow now..........Thanks.
