I regularly get the 'Blue screen of death' on my computer when closing. I dont fancy uninstalling and reinstalling XP,as I have read there are problems there. I have not De-fragged for over a year but I have now a load of music files in 'My Music'. Will a De-frag mess this up.Many thanks for ANY advice

I doubt if defrag will stop the blue screen of death but you can try.

Defrag should not effect any files on the disk, including music files.

All it does is move files, or parts of files, from one part of the disk to another, it does not change or delete any files.

Thanks Mr helpfulguy I can at least try it
As vehelpfulguy says it's unlikely that a defrag will have any effect on the BSD, but you should read what the BSD has to say because it often gives good pointers to where your problems may be.

Thanks for the info. The trouble is this problem goes back at least 9 months and if it is a question of uninstalling a programme I would not know which of many to start on. My son will be here for Xmas who knows much more than I so I will ask him to try. The odd thing is I have even had the BSD when first opening up. Thanks to you all.
Try installing CCleaner (from www.ccleaner.com) and scan for issues. Also run the "analyze" and have a good ole' clear out !
Good luck
