The most expensive are ceramic like material that exactly match your existing teeth in color and shading. This is usually the choice for front teeth since they are so visible. However, I have had crowns placed on molars and have chosen what here is termed "base metal". They have a gold tone and are very durable, having had one for at least 20 years. They are less than half the price of ceramic and much cheaper, of course, than gold. Good luck!
Dead boring link, but have a look at

I had most of mine bridged/crowned about 10 years ago by a private dentist here in the UK. The options at that time were, per tooth: 50, or 100, or 200, depending on the quality of the product used, not on the procedure. I guess you could increase these by up to 50% to allow for inflation, etc, so this ties in with Annie456's answer. I opted for the 200 ones which may have been made of porcelain, I cannot remember, but I do remember that I paid for them with plastic!
They're still as good as new, incidentally.
