Is it true that an engagement ring should cost one months salary? Is it bad luck if it doesn't?

My diamond engagement ring was second hand & cost nowhere near a months salary! Even if it had, it wouldn't have made an atom of difference as we're still together after all these years (albeit thro' all the ups & downs of life)!
My wedding ring cost my husband 6 Guineas from James Walker way back in 1964. It's 22 carat gold & despite all the nappy changing, household chores & gardening, it still looks as good as the day it was placed on my finger 42 years ago!
