We had a similar situation when we moved into our property so first thing we did is get a corgi bloke round to remove gas fire and cap off supply and we opted for a wood burner instead of another gas fire. Have you thought of going down that route instead of having a gas/electric fire fitted. And regards the difference between boilers is, a back boiler water is heated up my means off a gas supply usually operated from underneath the fire (not that efficient at all)
Hi gwizel
If it is an open flue with facility to burn a traditional coal fire or logs then the water in the back boiler is heated from the heat from the fire. This set up works on convection and the hot water is stored in a cylinder usually in the airing cupboard .
No You can only replace with the same manufacture's fires designed for use with back boilers. Under no circumstances should you install an electric one and leave the back boiler there on its own. They have come on a long way and some are quite modern now. If you know the make of the fire you could look them up or post back and I could see what sort they have to offer for you.
