I am looking to purchase my first new luggage, I'm looking for either a garment carrier or a 28/29" upright suiter and have been torn between two ideologies: 1. buying a superb quality piece (travelpro, delsey, atlantic) or 2. buy cheaper stuff therein allowing me to actually just get a whole set.(even though I only need the one piece) This stuff only goes on pleasure travels occasionally internationally. Many friends swear that #2 is the way to go . . . it is all going to get ruined anyways. What's the consensus ???!?!?!!!

My El Cheapo Millets rucksack is finally sprouting holes after 17 years of heavy use including being lugged around a rainforest, bounced all around America and Canada, and various trips around Europe and Africa. Cheap worked for me.
I have been around various parts of the world in the last 13 years (65 countries/16 US states/over 100 flights). I have seen all sorts of stuff coming past on the luggage carousel. There is no specific way to go. Tough plastic is good, soft sided is cheaper but liable to more damage. The best case I have I bought was a Carlton hard plastic bought 8 years ago in a sale for 40. The handlers at Miami and JFK have not yet managed to remove the wheels, handles or hinges. This cannot be said for any other pieces I have where stanlye knives have clearly been used in the sorting process.
