just took my car for a service and i have been told i need a new oil sump apparently the mechanic said it was a common fault i cant believe it if its a common fault why dont ford sort it out

I take it your cars a 2000 X and not a 1981 X. :) Your cars 6 matbe 7 year old so what do you expect, things do rot over a period of time

i quite agree with you johnny......it is true that older fords are bad for the sump rotting...they could use better quality steel or do what volkswagen and most french manufacturers do and use an alluminium alloy which does not rust,,,,,a little more expensive but not a huge amount in the real world..
the sump for your car will only be about �40 to buy...
the 1.3 hcs ford engine has a steel sump therefore it rots quite quickly, same fault with fiat puntos .mose cars now manufactured with aluminium sumps.
