2 brothers are fighting,so their mother punished them by making them both stand on the same sheet of nespaper until they were ready to make up.She did it in such a way that neither boys could touch the other.How did she manage to do this?

She cut the middle part of the newspaper into a long thin zig-zag strip so that the two ends of the sheet of paper could be put far apart without tearing the paper into two bits. (The fact that I thought of this answer instead of DOB's more sensible suggestion probably reveals something about how my mind works)
