I use a creative zen Xtra, 40Gb, capable of storing 32000 tracks (in theory). It's nice to be able to lay down in bed and have your whole music collection at your fingertips. Plus you get a good 14hrs of play back which is important. (Dixons/Currys 229)
I like the Craetive Labs Nomad Zen Xtra. They now have a 60GB version still cheaper than 40 GB iPod. IPod has nice features but you pay a lot more for them. There are a lot of after market products for the iPod but they too are expensive. IPod is also too proprietary. The software is not user friendly.
You could buy two Nomad 30GB for the price of one 40GB iPod. The Nomad Zen Xtra has a removable 14 hour battery which is nice, I have spares. The battery life on these are rated if the mp3 files are at 128 kps. The higher the kps the less the battery life. It is also easier to pull the songs off of the Nomad to burn them to CD (if you still do that). IPod requires hacking software to perform that.
As far as 4 GB - too small. Ipod and Noamd can both be used as external hard drives to store photos or documents, etc. Get at least 20GB. Shop around-don't go for iPod just because of the name. I have a personal bias towards Creative Labs Nomad Zen Xtra. It's great!!!!
