You should normally receive a Notice of intended prosecution within 14 days of the offence.

This time can be extended if for example it was a company car or hire car and it took time to trace the actiual driver responsible
Must is a key word. There are so many vaiables for NIPS and stated cases. As a summary offence, 6 months is the cut off, but as above most NIPs should be within 14 days.

I assume it is a camera offence. If warned by an officer (in uniform) or after an accident, then a NIP is not required.
