Call me stupid (Or just ignorant), but I've always used those terms interchangeably...
The words are interchangeable, but it is usual to use prison for a place of long-term incarceration. A gaol is a prison, especially one for people awaiting trial. A jail is an American gaol.
In Monopoly (now Mono University?), you Go Directly to Jail- not prison.
But the TV series was The Prisoner (not the Jailer or even Jailor).
