Given way too much change in shop.!!

I went into a shop to buy a couple of bits which came to �3. I handed the cashier a �10 note, and she gave me �17 in change!! She must have thought I had handed her a �20, or else she was just miles away. As I was watching my son at the same time I didn't twig till I got back to my car. So.... I just kept the money and went home. Would you have done the same or would you have gone all the way back to the shop and given it back??

can u be absolutely sure that you did not give her a 20 and not a 10? If you had gone back she would have had to wait until the next day after cashing up anyway, but i have had women who say they gave a 20 when it was a 10. plus, for her to have given you the wrong change, as most tills tell the assistant how nuch to give back, she must have keyed in that u gave her 20

busybee if she went to confession then I take it she took the money back, otherwise what was the use in going to confession. did she get 3 Our Fathers for penance.

This happened to me in Boots once.

The dozy mare was too busy chatting to her mate behind the counter, and not only handed me my change but also the note I had given her in the first place. I was actually about to tell her what she had done but she was too busy telling her mate about who she had got off with the previous night.

In my retail experience, nobody I have ever worked with (or me) has had wages docked for till discrepancies.

I work for the Post Office, and we ARE docked wages if we make a mistake, not funny especially when you work with large sums of money.
I have been given too much money off customers on numerous occasions, and ALWAYS hand it back, I just hope there a decent people out there, that would do the same for me!

If a customer has given me too much money I have always handed it back too. On the other hand, I have never handed over too much change...

I have been given too much change a few times, and I always give it back. I worked as a cashier, so I am sypathetic. If I found some money on the floor, I would take it!!

I have had it happen, and realised when in the shop, I have give it back, (because I have witnessed till assistants being grilled about it) and I have had it happen when I realised in the car, and not gone back, but I have also had it happen, realised in the car and got out and gone back to admit. Depends on many variables I think, your bank balance, whether you're happy, or feeling hard done by and whether you like the till assistant.

Good grief.!!
Just to clarify, yes it was def a ten pound note as I only had one note in my purse and some coins.
I now know that the woman who served me actually runs the shop herself and is not just a member of staff.

why hand money you find on the floor in to the shop? it is nothing to do with them - what do you think the person who you give it to will do with it? put it in the till? i doubt it! and if they did, why should you up the shops profits?

no, they will keep it themselves.

i mean would you go back to a shop and tell them you lost some money earlier on and expect to get it back? not likely is it.

i would keep money found on the floor.

i think it would depend on the situation about the change - a personal family run shop full of help polite staff then yes i'd give it back, but some snotty 17 year old, or huge chain store, then no

Joko- In the shop I work in, if someone hands in money found on the floor it gets taken upstairs to be kept in the safe and is recorded in the Lost Property book, where it was found, day and time. Then if someone comes back looking for it it can be returned to them. Though to be honest I'm not sure if anyone ever has come back looking for money. So I don't know where it goes after that, presumably it stays in the safe forever?

A similar thing happened to me in my local pub on Satuday night. I ordered 2 drinks which came to �5, gave the bar lady (who was new by the way) �10, she gave me �15 change. She must've thought i had given her a �20! I didn't really click till i had got back to table and i felt way too ashamed to tell anyone so just kept my mouth shut!! Now i feel awful!x
