personal no plates
i was thinking of buying the wife a personal reg no for her 40th birthday the problem is the car is untaxed having checked the dvla website .although i havent spoken to the seller iam assuming it wont be motd or on retention either so i would like to know if i would have to buy the car and mot and tax it in order to get the plate transferred to her car or is there any other way around this as i have no interest in the car its currently on . i mean why go to the expense of making it road legal when i would rather scrap it or give it away for spares .the plate is irish and on a 1993 rover 216 hence car not worth it .any advice please welcomed.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The dvla will not allow the transfer of number plates between cars,unless they are both moted,(if they need it )and they also must be taxed,there are certain exceptions to this,ie written off cars,etc,but im afraid it wont be relevent in this case.why not look on their site or other websites for a alternative number plate.as this one seems a bit expensive for you to proceed.
You should look at the DVLA site first, probably find that you are able to get the plate you actually want for a better price, and no hassle with buying a car you don�t want.
A large proportion of DVLA plates start at just �250 all in, which tends to be cheaper than most commercial companies.
One big advantage with DVLA site is searching for the specific number you require, a piece of cake!!

in reply to etype and ermm ive already tried dvla,s website and the plate is not there. the registered keeper is still the owner of the car so the plate belongs to them until they either sell the car or possibly scrap it. if its scrapped then the plate dies with the car as dvla will not re issue plates for cars that are no longer in active use.

forgot to mention the reason i wanted to buy this particular plate is that the numbers on it match my wifes date of birth ive tried dvla and other plate sellers websites and there was only one plate with a number combination ie same nos but reversed and that would cost me �850 so even that would make the old rover possibly worth buying and mot it as that could still cost a lot less than the �850 plate ive just mentioned.
