It could be that WMP doesn't recognise the codec for the video.

Try opening it with a decent media player, instead of WMP. If the data forms a valid AVI file (irrespective of the codec used), VLC should open it:

Anything like :

Real Media Player
Quicktime Media Player
or
DivX player

will open .AVI files.
You'll probably need to download the divx codec from www.divx.com
Click Tools -Options-Performance- then move slider to video acceleration Full.
If it is already at Full do you have a reasonable graphics card ?
Sounds like a codec problem
2 downloads for you.
g-spot from http://gspot.headbands.com/
this will show what codec is installed / required

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Meg a_Codec_Pack.htm

is a good FREE package of codecs for many formats
