Strange fruit
On my travels I have come across a fruit that looks rather like an ugly yellow apple, slightly furry and it gives off a wonderful smell - somewhat like that of a mango but if anything even more enticing. Inside the flesh and seed area look more or less exactly like those in an apple but the flesh is dry and a bit astringent. This fruit is generally cooked in food (e.g. stews) where it lends a slightly sweet flavour, or else in jam. Does anyone know its English language name ?

Quinces are not exactly common supermarket items and my only experience of them is seeing them on trees at a distance when they looked to me to be about the size of or just a bit bigger than a baby's fist. These were the size of small grapefruit - but what a beautiful smell. Thanks for the replies.
